Connecting your electricity

What do you want from your electricity retailer?

Naturally good value for money is important, but there are some other things you may want to consider:
  • Check if they offer a 'move in guarantee', so if your electricity isn't on by the agreed date, you can claim a credit until your power is switched on.
  • Will you be charged an exit fee should you want to cancel your energy contract in future?
  • Can they do a meter reading on the day you move in, to make sure you don't get saddled with someone else's usage costs.
  • Do they offer any additional services to help you manage your energy, such as online tools or phone Apps that let you monitor your energy use and costs before your bill arrives?
  • Do they offer flexibility and choice around when you receive your bill, such as monthly billing?
  • Do they have good customer service? If you have a question, can you talk to someone 24/7 or is their service line limited?
  • Do they offer a rewards program, such as flybuys or other schemes?
  • Can they supply both electricity and gas so you can have the convenience of having both with the one retailer?

When do you need to be connected?

  • It's best to give plenty of notice to your electricity retailer so you don't incur additional charges.
  • Most electricity retailers don't work on weekends and additional fees may apply for same day connections.
  • If you're running late, we can still help you get your power switched on if you call connectnow on 1300 554 323 before 11am on the business day before you move in.

How long does it take to connect a newly built home?

  • New homes can take up to 20 days to get connected.
  • Check with your builder when your electricity meter will be installed
