Choosing an electricity plan

• Rates
  How much the retailer charge their customers on particular plans. This covers fixed service charges and usage charges for how much electricity you use.
• Discounts
  Retailers often offer discounts to consumers that pay their bill in full and pay on time.
• Fixed term vs. no fixed term contracts
  Retailers offer consumers the opportunity to choose to enter into a contract (usually 2 or 3 years) at more competitive prices. Consumers can often take this contract with them if they move home again. Consumers who do not want to enter into a fixed term agreement can take a 'no fixed term' product. These products allow for more flexibility but usually the rates are not as competitive as fixed term products.
• Green components
  Retailers often offer consumers the opportunity to purchase renewable energy from green generation facilities (including solar, wind or hydro) at an additional charge. Consumers can often choose the percentage of green electricity (10%, 20%, 50%, and 100%) that they would like to be sourced from a renewable supplier. This does not guarantee that green fuel will be used specifically for your home – but it means that your chosen percentage of green energy will be purchased by your retailer from a renewable energy source.
